Favorite 30 Films of the Decade as according to Sunshine Mayfield

As I picked these movies I went off of my favorite movies. There are a billion opinions on what the greatest movies are and these are simply mine. However, I tend to be right about these things so there. =)

30. Garden State (2004) – Natalie Portman is just so damn cute. I will state that if I ever meet a girl that is exactly like her in the Garden State, then I will marry her. Zach Braff and the rest of the cast are also quite amazing in the quirky comedy-drama.


29. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) – This is the one I might get the most crap for. I love Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Every single moment of it is hilarious to me. I also love the part when they talk about Sarah Marshall in a crappy horror movie where phones kill you, because she was in that movie. It is called Pulse and it was a piece of pure trash. If you catch little things like that, you will enjoy Forgetting Sarah Marshall just as much as I do.


28.This is England (2006) - This is the English equivalent to American History X. The story of this boy in vicious and utterly compelling. It is simple. This movie is phenomenal.


27. Inglorious Basterds (2009) – The one comment I hated most about this movie is that “It’s not historically accurate.” I am pretty damn sure that Tarantino knew this when he killed off Hitler, so quit the bitching and just enjoy a movie that is one hell of a time.

26. Up In the Air (2009) – A great cast and a great story allow this movie to be superb. Clooney and the rest had me intrigued from start to finish. Simply put, it is just incredible.


25. The Hurt Locker (2008) – It won best picture over Avatar, THANK GOD! Take that James Cameron and learn to write a script better. Bigelow won Best Director for a reason. She knows what she is doing. This movie barely made any profit which is a damn shame, but it was so good.


24. The Wrestler (2008) – Mickey Rourke is a completely mess in this flick and I enjoyed watching him every step of the way. He is a crappy father who is still holding onto the dreams of a twenty year old. This movie has staplers, steroids, and the ever so sexy Marisa Tomei. Please tell me why you would not want to watch this movie.

23. Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 (2003-2004) – It’s about a girl taking revenge in the most bad ass of ways. It’s brutally entertaining and every minute is a joy to watch. Not to mention the score kicks just as much ass as Uma Thurman.


22. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) – We might all have dysfunctional families but the Tenenbaums top every single one of them. The entire cast is amazing and it’s a Wes Anderson film. Could this really add up to be anything but amazing?


21. 500 Days of Summer (2009) – Joseph Gordon-Levitt is killer in most of the things he takes part in. There is a reason another one of his flicks in this list. But Zooey Deschanel brings everything together. These two are great. The movie is sad, funny, interesting, and you get to look at Zooey Deschanel for an hour and forty-five minutes. What more could one ask for?


20. Shaun of the Dead (2004) – Edgar Wright has put out three movies and each one has been quite good. Plus it doesn’t get better than Zombies getting killed by Vinyl records. It’s a blast of a movie to watch, hilarious, and definitely one of the best films of the decade.


19. Once (2006) – Man it is just such a beautiful movie. It warms the heart and makes me feel so good inside. Plus, the music in this film is just so damn good. There is a reason that Falling Slowly won best original song and that’s because it’s good. Once is the true musical. It’s not about people singing while cooking breakfast, it’s about the love of music and how some people are willing to have very little because of it. It is just so damn good!

18. Sin City (2005) – Oh it is just so brutal, how could you not enjoy Sin City. I’m waiting for Sin City 2 if that is ever going to happen. If this movie doesn’t give your eyes an orgasm then I don’t know what will.


17. Moon (2009) – Oh how Sam Rockwell got shafted for not even getting nominated for Moon.  Possibly my favorite motion picture from 2009, if you enjoy space, good acting, and having your mind blown, then you will enjoy Moon.


16. Zodiac (2007) – In my opinion, this is one of the most underrated movies from 2007. It didn’t get any recognition from the Academy which is a complete shame. This movie is dark, creepy, haunting, compelling, and everything that a movie should be. Solid performances are delivered from Gyllenhaal and Downey Jr. and it is just one of the many great flicks from David Fincher. 


15. Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (2004) – If you try to tell me that Jim Carrey can only do comedies then clearly you have not seen this movie. Sure it has its quirky moments but this is a drama that thrives off of Carrey and it is incredibly impressive what he accomplishes during this flick.


14. The Lives of Others (2006) – It is a story that is incredibly compelling. The entire thing was shot in such a beautiful manner, that it is hard to look away. If you don’t like foreign films because you don’t like to “read” a movie then my advice to you is GET OVER IT. You are missing out on a great film if you do not watch this movie.


13. There Will Be Blood (2007) - Daniel Day-Lewis puts together one of the greatest acting performances I have seen in a very long time. It is a compelling flick and someone gets beat to death with a bowling pin.


12. No Country for Old Men (2007) – Javier Bardem leads this film to be as great as it is. However, you can’t write off the entire movie on him. The rest of the cast delivers the Coen Brothers script extremely well and it’s not every day you get to see someone killed with a cattle gun.


11.Thank You for Smoking (2005) – What a great movie! Eckhart delivers along with everyone else in the cast. Reitman wrote a script that was witty and smart. If you haven’t read Christopher Buckley’s novel, I would also recommend doing that. Thank You for Smoking will put a smile on your face, and if it doesn’t then you are missing something.


10.  The Dark Knight (2008) – What a perfect example of everyone being on top of their sh*t. Oldman, Eckhart, Bale, and you cannot forget one of the greatest villains played by Ledger at his best.


9.  Revolutionary Road (2008) – This movie will grab your heart, rip it out, and taunt you with it. It is powerful, gripping, incredibly depressing but without a doubt one of the greatest films of the decade.


8. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son about His Father (2008) - One of the greatest documentary films I have ever watched, and one of the saddest films I have ever seen. Every emotion possible is provoked and drives you through a story that everyone needs to see!


7. City of God (2002) – Just a well done movie in every aspect. It’s dark, brutal, and you cannot tear your eyes away from it. So Damn Good!


6. Memento (2000) – Really, how much do I have to say? It is original, well shot, the story is one of the best told, and it is amazing. If you haven’t seen it, drop whatever your doing and go watch the damn movie.


5. The Departed (2006) – With a cast like this and being directed by Mr. Scorsese, how could this flick be anything but amazing. It is compelling and the story is great. This movie is fantastic in every aspect imaginable. It doesn’t hurt that DiCaprio, Damon, and Nicholson are so amazing.


4. Almost Famous (2000) – Oh what a great example of the way Music changes us. This film is honest, gripping, and just so damn good. There is a reason it is number 4 and that is simply because it is PHENOMENAL.


3. Big Fish (2003) – A movie that makes we just want to go home and hug my dad. I’m not even going to lie; tears fell a little bit during this flick. It is done incredibly well and one of the few things keeping me from completely hating Tim Burton.


2. Brick (2005) – It is smart and entertaining, but you have to pay attention, don’t talk, don’t let others talk; don’t turn away from your TV. If you do these things, then you might possibly know what’s going on. It is a phenomenal flick that might take a couple of views, but with each viewing it gets better and better.


1. High Fidelity (2000) – This flick is brutally honest and hysterical. For you music people out there, who dig music/movies possibly more so than your significant other, then look no further. Not only is this my favorite movie of the decade, but possibly my favorite movie ever.

Movies reviewed on the 9/20 show and then some!!!!

Game 6 (2005)– I was pleasantly surprised by this flick. The movie started and it didn’t really seem to be going anywhere, but on the back half, the cast and story come together and produce something much deeper than I expected.3.5 out of 5

Top Gun (1986) – When it comes down to it, the fast passed action sequences and the corny jokes had me sold. What I am really confused by is how they took a 4 minute “Take My Breath Away” song and make it 25 min. I could go not hearing that song again.3 out of 5

Devil (2010) - When I went into this movie, I understood that it could go either way, but the way the story was told and the way it all came together, for whatever reason, worked for me. It's a thriller with a message and I really dug it. 4 out of 5

 

Enduring Love (2004) – Though it has a slow pace, I could never turn away from the movie. I was completely engulfed in these characters and I wanted to see what happened to them. The great performances mixed with the compelling score makes for a really solid movie.4 out of 5

Easy A (2010) - Any scene with Stanley Tucci is genuinely hilarious. The rest of the movie is just ehh. I'd wait for DVD with this one because it really is just OK. 3 out of 5

TOP 5: 1st

This Top 5 list is all about 1st movies in a franchise or trilogy. 

5. Clerks – Though you might not think that Clerks isn’t the start of a franchise, it definitely is. It is the first movie of the unofficial “Jersey Trilogy”. Clerks is crude, well written, and completely hilarious.

4. Toy Story – It’s a film from our childhood and it is phenomenal. It also leads to 2 great sequels. It’s a great trilogy and Toy Story started it all.

3. Matrix – As much as you can hate on the Matrix Trilogy, the first one was groundbreaking and mind blowing. And even though the rest of the trilogy sucked The Matrix is still one phenomenal motion picture.

2. Jaws – Jaws is such a great movie and is a classic. That shark has filled the minds and nightmares of people across the decades. This is such a great flick and definitely deserves to be on the top 5.

1. Silence of the Lambs - Silence of the Lambs is quite possibly one of the creepiest movies in cinematic history. It is creepy, disturbing, and deservingly holds the #1 spot on our top 5 list.

It's Gonna Be Good

It is about to happen and I am very excited. Mountain Top Movies is about to have it's first Show on Monday 9/20 at 8pm on 90.5 WASU FM Boone and all around the world at WASUrocks.com.
